The organisation endeavours to give parents the opportunity to make informed choices to feel empowered and confident leading up to and during their parenting journey. Primarily funded by the NT Department of Health, Birth and Beyond is a dynamic non-profit association with a current membership of 146 members, the majority of whom are expecting and new parents.

Job Description – Parent Support Worker, Birth and Beyond Parent Resource Centre
Work Location: Birth and Beyond Office, 10/89 Todd St (Fan Arcade)
Responsible to: Manager and Birth and Beyond Committee of Management
Remuneration: 2.1 Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award
Appointment: Casual position, 8-10hrs per week, Wednesday and Thursday (with occasional need to come in for meetings on other days as suits, this will be paid)

Services Provided to Parents in Alice Springs by Birth and Beyond
 ’Welcome Baby’ antenatal workshops for pregnancy, birth and parenting 

 Education and support sessions for parents
 Host special interest groups i.e. multiples group, third trimester group
 Weekly families morning teas to support networking between parents
 Library with DVDs, Books and CDs 

 Monthly newsletter distributed to members
 Drop in support for parents for a safe and welcoming place to change and feed baby
 Support networking between parent
 Advocacy i.e. improving maternity care, choices and services for parents 

 Hire of breast pumps, TENS machine and birth pools

Key Responsibilities
 The successful applicant will have the responsibility to assist the Manager with the coordination and implementation of the education and support services delivered by Birth and Beyond.
 The Parent Support Worker (PSW) will work alongside the manager and with parents, families, educators and facilitators to develop education opportunities and offer resources that support safe and satisfying birth experiences, and informed and confident parenting.
 The PSW is guided by and reports to the Manager of Birth and Beyond.
 The PSW will assist the day-to-day running of the organisation (including managing volunteers; overseeing the loan and hire schemes; contributing to monitoring the organisation’s financial operations; communications, marketing and promotions)

Selection Criteria
 Demonstrated organisational and administrative skills.
 Ability to take initiative, work independently, adapt to new tasks, prioritise workload and maintain discretion/confidentiality. 

 Knowledge and understanding of the key issues facing expecting and new parents in Central Australia. 

 Ability to work collaboratively with the Manager and the Committee.
 Marketing, promotion and communication, including through social media. 

 Any other relevant experience or qualification you feel you could bring to the role.

 Staff must have a Working With Children Clearance (Ochre Card)
 Staff must observe the Birth and Beyond immunisation guidelines (copy on request)

Job Description- Childbirth Educator(s) - Active Birth and First Six Weeks Workshops

Summary
Childbirth Educators teach classes to empower and prepare families for childbirth and new life. Classes take place at Birth and Beyond. This is an interactive, experiential evidence-based training course to support women and their partners gain confidence and trust in the birth journey. Participants are expected/encouraged to be involved, to explore core concepts, and try out new strategies.


About the Role
- Active Birth: You have a broad and sound knowledge of pregnancy, the physiology of labour and birth, informed decisions and consent for childbirth, knowledge of commonly used medications, interventions and their possible cascades, varying locations of birth including hospital and home, as well as an appreciation of different cultural pregnancy and birth practices and how to support the woman and her partner to integrate those in their journey.
- First Six Weeks: You have a broad and sound knowledge of postpartum care, becoming new parents, role of support people, infant sleep patterns, breastfeeding, perinatal mental health, bathing, infant communication, baby products such as cloth nappies, carriers, slings, car seats, infant massage, fussy periods, how to calm babies, the importance of self-care with a newborn, relationship changes with a newborn/family dynamics, as well as current and changing trends and the evidence supporting those.

- You will be registered on the AHPRA Professional Register, as a midwife or nurse (maybe with additional maternity, child and family health qualifications). Or you may be on the register in physiotherapy, medicine, psychology, and others, or you provide doula services, teach pre-natal and/or post-natal yoga or similar services and have a sound knowledge relevant to providing Active Birth and First Six Weeks classes.
- You will need skills in adult learning and group facilitation to provide excellent birth and parenting education to small groups.
- You must work in accordance with the Australian National Competency Standards for Childbirth and Early Parenting Educators (2018).
- You will be responsible for producing the course delivery materials and regularly review and update these as new trends and evidence-based practises emerge. Birth and Beyond can provide a Birth International education package including pelvis, baby, uterus, placenta, etc.
- Please note, these workshops are complementary to the Alice Springs Hospital childbirth education classes and all participants are encouraged to attend the hospital class prior to the Birth and Beyond classes.

The two workshops (Active Birth and First Six Weeks) can be provided by two different childbirth educators. Please contact the Birth and Beyond Manager to discuss these roles.

Salary
The rate per class/half day is $275. The hours are usually two half days or one full day however this is flexible pending experience and availability. The classes can be tailored to the educators’ requirements, suggestions and expertise.
